Important Update: Health NZ Strike – Thursday 1 May

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora has advised that senior doctors who are members of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) will be striking for 24 hours on Thursday, 1 May, from 12:01am to 11:59pm.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Emergency Departments remain open – however, please only attend if absolutely necessary.

  • Inpatients will continue to receive care – hospital patients will still be looked after during the strike.

  • Appointments and surgeries – if your appointment or surgery is affected, you will be contacted directly. If you haven't been contacted, please attend your appointment as planned.

  • Life Preserving Services (LPS) will be available where needed to ensure critical care is maintained.

If you need urgent hospital care during this time, you should still seek help — but please be aware contingency procedures will be in place.

GPs and community providers have been asked to continue referring urgent cases in the usual way.

Thank you for your understanding and support.
