12 Month Prescriptions from February 2026
From early next year, national prescribing rules are changing. From 1 February 2026, some patients may be eligible for prescriptions that remain valid for up to 12 months. We want to give plenty of notice so you know what to expect.
At Newtown Medical Centre, your health and safety guide every decision we make. Longer prescriptions will not suit everyone, and an in person review will be required before your clinician can confirm whether this option is right for you.
Until then, all regular prescriptions will stay on the usual 3 month cycle.
Who may be eligible
You may be able to receive a 12 month prescription if:
• Your health condition is stable
• Your medication and dose have not changed in at least 6 months
• You do not require frequent monitoring, such as regular blood tests or blood pressure checks
• The medication is approved for 12 month prescribing
• You are comfortable attending an annual in person review to ensure the treatment remains appropriate
What is not included
Some prescriptions cannot be provided for 12 months, including:
• Controlled medications such as opioids or stimulants
• Medicines taken only when needed
• Medications that require ongoing monitoring
• Cases where your condition or medication dose has changed recently
Your clinician will always recommend what is safest and most suitable for your care. For some patients, continuing with a 3 month prescription will remain the best option.
What stays the same
Even with a 12 month prescription:
• Pharmacies can only dispense up to 3 months at a time
• You will receive repeats, not a full 12 month supply at once
