ADHD assessments from 1 February 2026
From 1 February 2026, national changes across Aotearoa mean that some specially trained GPs may be able to diagnose adult ADHD and initiate treatment.
What does this mean for patients at Newtown Medical Centre?
At this time, Newtown Medical Centre will not be offering assessments to diagnose ADHD or initiating ADHD medications.
ADHD assessments require a comprehensive clinical review and additional specialist training. We are not currently set up to provide this service within our practice.
What support is available?
We can continue to refer patients to external providers, such as private psychiatrists or other specialist clinics, for ADHD assessment and diagnosis.
If you have concerns about ADHD or would like to discuss your symptoms, we encourage you to book an appointment with your GP. They can talk through your options, provide advice, and arrange a referral where appropriate. Standard consultation fees apply.
If you have any questions, please contact the practice or book an appointment to speak with your GP.
